Is Your Oxford Home Due A Rewire?
Oxford has a rich mix of property types, from Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Jericho and East Oxford through to mid-century semis, converted flats and modern family homes across the area. Although the older properties are a great place to live, many are still running on electrical installations that have not been touched in decades, and while the lights may still come on, the wiring behind the walls can tell a very different story.
Our local electricians carry out full and partial rewires regularly across Oxford, handling every project from initial assessment through to completion and certification.
A full house rewire typically includes:
Our team regularly carries out house rewiring projects across Oxfordshire, working in properties of all ages and types throughout the city and surrounding areas. The housing stock in the area is particularly varied, and our local Oxford electricians have extensive experience working in period homes where original fabric needs to be respected as well as in modern properties requiring a more straightforward installation.
We also carry out rewiring projects in Abingdon, Witney, Bicester, Didcot, Banbury and Kidlington, as well as throughout many of the towns and villages. If you are unsure whether your property needs a full or partial rewire, we are happy to carry out an assessment and give you an honest recommendation before any work is agreed.

We Will Never Recommend More Work Than Is Necessary
Not every property requires a full rewire. In some cases, a partial rewire is the more practical and cost-effective solution, addressing specific circuits, rooms or areas of the installation that fall short of current standards without the need to replace everything throughout the property.
A partial rewire is often the right approach following an extension or renovation, where new circuits need to be added to serve the new space. It is also common in older Oxford properties where certain areas of the wiring have deteriorated more than others, or where an EICR has identified specific circuits that require replacement rather than the installation as a whole.
Our team will always give you an honest assessment of whether a full or partial rewire is the most appropriate solution for your property. There is no benefit to recommending more work than is genuinely needed, and we will always explain our recommendation clearly before any work is agreed.
The Foundation Every Property Should Be Built On
For landlords and property investors across Oxford, an outdated electrical installation is both a safety concern and a compliance issue. A failed EICR, aged wiring or an insufficient consumer unit can mean a property cannot be legally let until remedial work is carried out, and in many cases, a full rewire is the most practical resolution.
We work with a large number of Oxford landlords, from those managing a single rental property through to larger portfolios across Oxfordshire. Our team understands the importance of completing rewiring projects efficiently, with minimal disruption to tenants and all certification provided promptly on completion.
For commercial properties, the same principles apply. Whether you manage office premises, retail units or other commercial spaces across Oxford, we can assess the existing installation, advise on the most appropriate course of action and carry out the work to the highest standard with full certification on completion.
Our House Rewiring FAQs
Yes. A full house rewire always includes the installation of a new consumer unit, as the existing unit will not meet current 18th Edition regulations in most cases. The new consumer unit will include RCD and RCBO protection across all circuits, providing significantly improved safety compared to older units. The consumer unit installation is included as part of the full rewire service and will be certificated along with the rest of the installation on completion.
The most reliable way to find out is to have an Electrical Installation Condition Report carried out by a qualified electrician. This will assess the full electrical installation and identify any areas that fall short of current safety standards. Common indicators that a rewire may be needed include wiring that has not been replaced in 25 years or more, old-style rewirable fuses in the consumer unit, rubber or fabric-insulated wiring, persistent flickering lights, frequently tripping circuits or sockets and switches that feel warm to the touch. If you are in any doubt, our team is happy to carry out an assessment and give you an honest recommendation.
The duration of a house rewire depends on the size of the property, the complexity of the existing installation and whether the property is occupied during the work. For a typical three-bedroom Oxford home, a full rewire usually takes between three and five days. Larger properties, those with more complex layouts or properties with original period features that require careful handling, may take longer. Our team will give you a clear indication of the expected timeframe during the initial survey so you can plan accordingly.
A full rewire involves the complete replacement of the electrical installation throughout the entire property, including all wiring, sockets, switches, lighting circuits and the consumer unit. A partial rewire addresses specific areas or circuits, for example, rewiring a single floor, a newly extended part of the property or circuits that have been identified as unsafe during an EICR. Our team will assess your property and advise on whether a full or partial rewire is the most appropriate solution for your situation.
